The Eritrean Koka gold mine is located about 165 km north-west of Asmara, the capital of Eritrea, northeast Africa and forms part of the Zara gold field in Eritrea. The discovery and mining of the deposit dates back to the earliest days of the ancient Egyptians, but more systematic exploration did not progress until Sub-Sahara acquired the exploration rights in the area in 1998. Despite the relatively low exploration and research levels at present, the existing engineering reserves have reached a large scale of 840000 ounces, equivalent to 26.13t, with a good prospect of metal reserves.
