Background Bacterial microcompartments are intracellular structures consisting of a thin protein shell enclosing enzymes in a polyhedral body 70-150 nm in diameter. Many Enterobacteriaceae contain linked operons specifying a cobalamin synthesis pathway (cob or cbi operon) and an operon specifying microcompartments allowing the cobalamin-dependent fermentation of 1,2-propanediol (pdu operon).
