Nodulation of most legumes requires successtul intracellular infection via root hairs. This involves formation of a tubular invagination of the cell wall and plasma membrane called the infection thread that provides controlled passage of the rhizobia through the cell.Infection thread formation is preceded by the formation of a trans-cellular cytoplasmic bridge that predicts the path of the growing tube.
