During the time I have to talk to you today, I want to make a point about which I am totallyconvinced: namely, that in order to maintain and advance womens rights and status in the world today,we ought to return and extend a basic dictum of 1970s North American feminist politics. That dictum is: The Personal is Political.First,I want to say what I mean and value about feminist principles.Basically feminist discourse depends on two teachings:number one:genderis a category of analysis;and, number two:women must be accorded rights, dignity, respect and resources equal to those of men.Of course these teachings are complex and must be nuanced and inflected in regard to considerations of historical, economic and social contexts.Nevertheless,I do maintain that without these two ideas, feminism disappears as an intellectual and political movement of consequence and the rights of women throughout the globe are in jeopardy.
