Plant zygotes divide asymmetrically into an apical cell that develops into an embryo and a basal cell generating a temporary suspensor. The suspensor timing degeneration at a later stage of embryogenesis has been known for many years and has been proposed to be a PCD process, but its biological impact on embryogenesis and its underlying molecular mechanism-in particular, how the degeneration is triggered-are largely unknown.
