A new type of coating composited with 321 stainless steel and aluminum (321—Al coating) was prepared by respectively using the 321 austenitic stainless steel wire and pure aluminum wire as the anode and cathode feed stocks during the arc spraying process. The traditional coating using twin 321 stainless steel wires (321 coating) was also prepared as comparison. The microstructure, phase compositions and elements distribution of both coatings were determined by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM),X-ray diffraction (XRD) and energy dispersion spectroscope (EDS).The wear resistant properties of the coatings were tested by using the ring-block type sliding wear apparatus. Results showed that, the 321—Al coating performed well in the tentatively spraying and machining experiments with different processing methodes.Except for the aluminum phase addition in the 321—Al coating,no other extra phases produce in comparing with the 321 coating, thus this preparing method can not lead to metallurgic reactions between the anode and cathode feed stocks. However, due to the additional aluminum, the 321—Al coating performs quite different microstructure characteristics and tribological behavior.
