Fetal echocardiography remains the mainstay of fetal cardiac diagnosis.It is also a critical part of the management of the fetus with arrhythmia and/or structural and functional heart disease, including twin-twin transfusion syndrome.Fetal intervention for specific types of structural heart disease, while still largely in its infant stages, is progressively being offered as an alternative treatment for fetuses with a high pre-or postnatal mortality rate.In some cases intervention is being investigated to potentially alter the natural history of a specific congenital heart lesion (i.e.pulmonary atresia/VSD or critical aortic stenosis), hoping for better outcomes.The state-of-the art of fetal echocardiography in the diagnosis and treatment of fetal and perinatal cardiac issues will be discussed.
