The PbTe - ZnTe eutectic composites (PbTe)1-x-(ZnTe)x(x =0.08,0.10,0.12,0.14) were prepared by melting, heat treatment and quenching based on the eutectic reaction in PbTe-ZnTe pseudo-binary system and their thermoelectric properties were investigated. The experimental results show that a small amount of ZnTe in the PbTe matrix enhances its mechanical properties, keeps its N type conduction, but decreases its Seebeck coefficient and increases its electrical resistivity and thermal conductivity, leading to the lower ZT as compared with that of PbTe.The best ZT of 0.52 was found in the alloy with x =0.08 at 661 K,lower than 0.75 of PbTe.Addition of Pb in the sample with x =0.8 increases the carrier concentration and reduces its electrical resistivity and thermal conductivity and thus enhances its ZT.The ZT of 0.97 was obtained in the sample with x =0.8 and 0.5 mol.% Pb addition which is 30% higher than 0.75 of pure PbTe.The improved mechanical robustness of these composites makes them attractive for use in large scale thermoelectric device fabrication.
