Using Simple Ocean Data Assimilation products we propose a new mechanism about the role of Barrier Layer (BL) in evolution of Indian Ocean Dipole Mode (IODM).This research shows that warm SST first appears in the Southeast of the Northern Indian Ocean (SNI0) in June of positive IODM events year and spreads southward with time.It is found that the positive SST anomaly persists for 6 months (from June to Nov.) in the SNIO, and the positive barrier layer thickness anomalies and corresponding to shallower mixed layerdepthwill be one of the dominate reasons for the positive SST anomaly persist.During the development phase of positive IODM there is positive feedback process: warm in the SNIO and cooling in the southeastern Indian Ocean intensifies the anomalous southeasterly anomaly, which transports more moisture to the SNIO and favor for the precipitation to increase continuously and maintain the thinker BL (shallower mixed layer) and positive SST anomaly in the SNIO.
