The green colonial microalga Botryococcus braunii has been brought to peoples attention for its conspicuous ability to synthesize and accumulate a variety of lipids including hydrocarbons.B.braunii strains are classified into 3 races (A, B, and L) based on the types of hydrocarbons they accumulate. Both A and B races are known to accumulate high level of lipids (i.e., 60% to 85% of cell try weight or CDW).However, extreme slow growth rate (i.e., 5-7 days of population doubling time) of B.braunii strains has impeded its application for renewable biofuel production.
