Dendritic cells (DCs) display an extraordinary capacity to induce, sustain and regulate T cell responses providing the opportunity of DC-based cancer vaccination strategies.Additional findings indicate that DCs may also play a crucial role for the activation of innate antitumor immunity.Recently, we defined 6-sulfo LacNAc (slan) DCs (formerly termed M-DC8+ DCs) as a major subpopulation of human blood DCs which represent principal producers of TNF-a and IL-12 (Immunity 2002;17:289-301, Immunity 2006;24:767-777).SlanDCs efficiently activate antigenspecific CD4+ T cells as well as tumor-reactive cytotoxic T cells and directly mediate tumor-directed cytotoxicity.
