With modem software numerical modelling design appears easy and enticing. While there is no uniquely correct modelling outcome, wide variation in observed outcomes suggest that insufficient thought and understanding is given to model setup, actual numerical calculations, and adoption of sound geomechanics principles.A methodology is demonstrated for the numerical modelling design of coal mine roof support.Used appropriately numerical modelling is a sound tool to design roof support and anticipate strata conditions with changing environments. It can define mechanisms that may be important to understand, which affect support selection and strategy. They are complementary to and should not replace available analytical or empirical methods.
