Introduction: Suicide is one of the leading causes of death among teenagers, occurring also in children.Schoolteachers have direct contact with children and teenagers as well as their parents, and play an important role in early prevention and detection of suicidal behaviours.Aiming to support schoolteachers in this important work, an educational intervention in suicide prevention was delivered for teachers from Diamantine, a Brazilian city with 45,000 inhabitants. Methods: The intervention consisted of two meetings of four hours each. The meetings consisted of: a) group activities; b) discussion about interests and previous knowledge of the group; c) presentation of theoretical aspects, intended to stimulate discussions on the following topics: suicidal behaviours, their recognition, and attitudes towards individuals with such behaviours and their families; risk factors, emphasizing domestic violence and bullying; and protective factors, including the importance of family support and the need for fostering schoolchildrens self-esteem, among other important aspects of suicide prevention. At the end of the second meeting an evaluation form was filled out by the participants. In the first part of this form they rated different aspects of the course from zero (worst) to 10 (best) and, in the second part, the schoolteachers were asked to comment on how prepared they felt to deal with suicidal people and on other aspects they considered important. Results and discussion: The meetings were productive and rich in discussions, showing that the theme was considered important by the educators.Forty-two participants completed the evaluation forms. The average ratings for the quantitatively evaluated items were: group activities-8.96; discussed topics-9.43; theoretical presentations-8.76; work team-relationship with participants-9.36; work team-knowledge on subject-9.43; learning of the participant-8.39 and preparation of the participant to deal with suicidal people-7.8.These results were considered very good by the team.In the open question regarding how prepared they felt to deal with suicidal people, participants stated that they were not well prepared yet, although they felt much better prepared than before the intervention, which is in accordance with the rating of 7.8 and expected after a first approach, of only eight hours, to such a complex subject. The other comments were related, predominantly, to the importance of being alert to the behaviour of their pupils and other people, making it possible to identify suicidal behaviours. The need for greater knowledge about child abuse as well as alcoholism and substance abuse-related disorders was also mentioned. These subjects need, therefore, to be deepened in future activities. In addition, the importance of fostering self-esteem should be discussed more intensively in the next meetings, as there were only few comments about this topic. Conclusion: The intervention reached its objective and will be followed by a second one for the same group. It will also be repeated for other teachers.
