Two novel metal-organic frameworks Ce(BTC)(DMF)2 (1)and Ce(BTC)(DMSO)2 (2)have been synthesized through reaction of the cerium ion (Ce3+) with 1,3,5-benzentricarboxylic acid (H3BTC) in different solutions,N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) and Dimethyl Sulphoxide (DMSO).Single-crystal diffraction analysis reveals that compound 1 and compound 2 possess similar 3D architectures and crystallized in a same space group,P2(1)/n.Each asymmetric unit of compound 1 contains one nine-coordinated cerium ion (Ce3+),one BTC ligand and two DMF molecules. The cerium ion is coordinated with nine oxygen atoms from two dimonodentate carboxyl groups (O1 and O2),two chelating bidentate carboxyl groups (O3,O4,and O5),one bidentate carboxyl group (O6 and O7) and two terminal DMF molecules (O8 and O9).Each asymmetric unit of compound 2 contains one eight-coordinated cerium ion (Ce3+),one BTC ligand and two DMSO molecules. The cerium ion is coordinated with eight oxygen atoms from four dimonodentate carboxyl groups (O1,O2,O3 and O4),one bidentate carboxyl group (O5 and O6) and two terminal DMSO groups.Since the crystallographically equivalent Ce ions of compound 1 and compound 2 are linked by four BTC groups to given two similar dimetallic SBUs (secondary building units). The dimetallic SBUs are linked each other through BTC ligands to result three dimensional frameworks.Although two compounds with the same SBUs are synthesized under similar reaction conditions, the channels of them are quite different. The channles in Compound 1 are rectangle and in compound 2 are rhombus. The sizes of two channels are approximately 10 (A) × 16 (A) and 12 (A) × 13 (A),respectively. The different channels of two compounds could be attributed to their different terminal molecules.Extension of this work will focus on how to use the different morphologies of the channels of two compounds.
