During the past decade, remote sensing of winds and turbulence from the ground has become the emerging standard for wind energy.This has been initially driven by the need to find a solution that could reach higher above the ground economically, given that turbine sizes were increasing.But as the remote sensing technology has matured, the drive is now toward a more accurate,reproducible, and convenient method of measuring winds near turbine sites.In this talk we review the current status of both lidars (optical) and sodars (acoustic), and new developments which will emerge over the next year or two.In particular we will address the issues of portability of both lidar and sodar instruments, their power consumption, reliability, calibration, and accuracy.We will also cover some case studies where we will quote from the real experience of end users doing resource assessment (as opposed to experience from research organizations and manufacturers).The emphasis of the talk will, however, be more on sodars, since this is the prime research and development interest of the speaker.For sodars, we will cover new technologies addressing use in complex terrain and urban environments, and the move toward lower power, and more turn-key operation.
