Since 2002, the Finnish National Current Care Guideline of Smoking cessation (SC) has defined specified tasks for community pharmacists in SC accordingly with other health-care professionals. All health-care professionals have specified responsibilities, and the local cooperation between them should facilitate SC by increasing contacts with patients. The role of community pharmacies revolve around supporting rational use of nicotine replacement therapy products and other SC medicines.Finnish community pharmacies are privately owned by pharmacists and highly regulated to emphasize public health goals in their operations. The staff in Finnish Community pharmacies is also highly educated.A nationwide mail survey was conducted to study (total n=2291) the familiarity and implementation on the National SC guideline in Finnish community pharmacies.Response rate was 54% (n=1190).Almost half (47%)of the respondents were familiar with the SC Guideline and familiarity enhanced implementation. The familiarity was associated with the respondents perceptions of their personal smoking cessation skills and knowledge (OR 3,8);of customers value of counseling on nicotine replacement therapy (OR3,3) and regular use of pocket cards supporting SC counseling (OR 3,0).Smoking cessation Guideline familiarity and implementation is crucial role for community pharmacist involvement in SC actions in addition to selling nicotine replacement product.Nicotine replacement therapy products were deregulated in Finland in 2006, which complicated community pharmacists involvement in supporting cessation, because quitters do not necessarily visit pharmacies for product purchases.Smoking is still common in Finland and community pharmacies contribution to SC in collaboration with other primary care providers is needed.
