This paper first discusses the urgent need for mill Level 2 upgrade,especially in achieving process stability.Then it summarizes the data,model and technologies available for performing a simple,low-cost,but very effective Level 2 upgrade,to improve both shape and property of rolled plate.Those data,model and technologies are from metal Pass Level 2 upgrade projects in USA and China,proved to be effective.In this way of upgrade,offline design was prepared on the basis of the rolling process and product models.The models take into account metallurgical phenomena and it has also removed learning logic defects incurred in many Level 2 packages in the market.Then the results were integrated into the online learning of the Level 2 System.The upgraded Level 2 system achieves extremely high parameter prediction accuracy,and thus greatly improves mill performances.
