The fishing activities and the model of sustainable fishing in Spain

  Spanish fishing activity has been showing signs of overexploitation of resources since the mid-20th century.On one hand, these have caused the relocation of fishing fleets to more remote fishing grounds worldwide, some of which also show signs of overfishing problems.On the other hand, the intense fishing activities near the coast are leading to a progressive decrease of resources by placing some species on the brink of extinction.As it stands, Spain has suffered a distinctly productivist model of its fishing activity.Since the countrys integration into the EU in 1986, the problem of the reduction of fishing efforts has increased.This reduction originally affected European Community waters but has since spread to fishing in third-party countries (new generation agreements) and numerous coastal fisheries.In recent times, there have been attempts to create a new sustainable marine resources management model.On one hand, sustainable fishing programmes in certain local communities have been developed.On the other hand, the newly controlled exploitation systems for shellfish have allowed its survival year after year.The issue of whether to fish less or in a more sustainable way and sell better has been raised.In relation to this objective, we will analyse a number of model experiences for the case of Galicia, located in the North-West of Spain and where half of Spains fishing fleet is concentrated.These sustainable models can establish the future of less aggressive fishing with less exposure to risk that will gain importance throughout the 21st Century.
