A Euro-4 compliant turbo GDI gasoline vehicle has been assessed for emissions using fast response gas and particulate analyzers. Transient emissions characteristics of the vehicle during the cold start and catalyst heating phases are studied in detail revealing some of the calibrators’ techniques for meeting legislated emissions levels combined with after treatment system configuration. The particulate emissions are measured with a view to future compliance with expected Euro-6 number-based emissions legislation. This paper considers the causes of the significant gaseous and particulate polluting events and possible methods of reducing such emissions.
