ent-Kaurene, a tetracyclic diterpene hydrocarbon, is a key intermediate in the biosynthesis of the plant hormone gibberellins (GAs).In model moss species Physcomitrella patens and a liverwort, Jungermannia subulata, have a bifunctional ent-copalyl diphosphate synthase/kaurene synthase (ent-CPS/KS) for ent-kaurene biosynthesis1,2, whereas in flowering plants ent-kaurene is biosynthesized from geranylgeranyl diphosphate (GGPP) by two distinct cyclases, ent-CPS and ent-KS3-6.
