Although diabetic retinopathy(DR)has been investigated as a complication of retinal vasculature clinically,increasing lines of evidences suggest that the neural retina starts to degenerate in early diabetes before onset of detectable vascular changes.Intraneuronal inclusions of hyperphosphorylated microtubule-associated tau protein play a central pathogenic role in neurodegenerative diseases.
