Extraction Behavior of Spent Ternary Cathodic Materials Using Supercritical CO2

  The metal extraction from spent ternary cathodic material using scCO2 was investigated.The Versatic acid,D2EHPA,PC88A and DEA (diethylamine) ligands were used to extract metal ions in scCO2.Prior to extract metals from solid phase directly,the influences of complexing-agent concentration was studied on divalent metals such as Co2+,Li+,Ni2+,and Mn2+ from leaching solution of spent ternary cathodic material.The method consists of scCO2/ligands complexation process and metal extraction process at 60 ℃ and 200 bar.Experiments with each ligand and constant solvent flow showed that cobalt and manganese were well extracted than lithium and nickel using Versatic acid or PC88A.In the case of D2EHPA,it was hardly dissolved in scCO2 so that it was not effective for metal extraction.However in binary system using solvent mixture with DEA,all metal components were extracted except for lithium (40-50%) using the mixture of Versatic acid and DEA or the mixture of PC88A and DEA.Selective extraction for cobalt from other metal ions was hardly achieved with those ligands.Therefore,further studies will be carried out to achieve cobalt extraction selectively using effective chelate ligands and also to extract cobalt directly from solid phase.
