Tunnels, being underground structures, have long been assumed to have the ability to sustatin earthquakes with little damage.However,investigations of mountain tunnels after the Wenchuan Earthquake in China revealed that many tunnels suffered significant damage to various extents.A method to cover a tunnel with a buffer layer is discussed herein as a possible measure for mitigating seismic damage to tunnels.The numerical analysis was conducted to study the seismic response of tunnels and demonstrate the seismic isolation effect of the buffer layer.The dissipated energy including damage dissipated energy and plastic dissipated energy was used to evaluate the effect of buffer layer on seismic behavior of tunnels.The results show that there is a reduction of the dissipated energy rate in the tunnel covered with a buffer layer
