Since 2001, Australia has relied principally on a federal renewable portfolio standard-the Renewable Energy Target-to encourage investment into renewable electricity.However, with the commencement of a carbon price in Australia from 1 July 2012 that is also designed to encourage investment in clean energy, now is an opportune time to revisit the relevance and design of the Renewable Energy Target and consider its relationship to the carbon price.In this regard, this paper will consider the design of the Renewable Energy Target and the potential for it to work alongside a carbon price to increase the deployment of renewable electricity in Australia.By doing so, this paper will identify and consider those elements of the regimes that are both complementary and contradictory.In light of this assessment, this paper will consider how Australias Renewable Energy Target and the newly founded carbon price may work together to deliver a more stable and robust approach to increase investment into renewable electricity in Australia in order to support the ongoing transition towards a greener and more sustainable electricity sector.
