If biomass contains heavy metals,heavy metals can be released from biomass during biodegradation and inhibit the anaerobic digestion process.This study was to examine the leaching characteristics of heavy metals from biomass compared to biomass degradation for prediction of heavy metal amounts in anaerobic digester.Sunflower(i.e.,Helianthus annuus)grown in heavy metal-contaminated soils was used as a biomass for anaerobic digestion.In lab-scale anaerobic batch test results,about 40-50%by wt.of biomass was biodegraded from VS removal and converted carbon from solid to liquid and gas phase.About 98%by wt.of Cu and Zn were leached from biomass for 41 days,whereas Cd,Pb,and Ni were barely leached.Heavy metals leaching tendency from biomass was less relevant to the biodegradation of biomass and dependent on heavy metal species.
