Monitoring and assessing the effects of contaminants in the aquatic environment is critical to protect human health and the environment.The zebrafish has been widely used as a prominent model organism in different biological fields because of its small size,low cost,diverse adaptability,short breeding cycle,high fecundity,and transparent embryos,etc.Recent studies have demonstrated thatthe sensitivity of genetically engineered zebrafish can aid in monitoring environmental hazard,especially with the application of transgenic zebrafish.The present presentation provides a brief overview of recent studies on wild-type and engineered zebrafish to monitor toxic heavy metals,endocrine disruptors,and organic pollutants for toxicology.A new direction for developing high-throughput detection of genetically modified transparent zebrafish is also addressed to open a new window for monitoring aquatic environment.
