In pharmacologic doses, niacin (nicotinic acid), remains an agent whose broad-spectrum beneficial effects on cardiovascular disease are unsurpassed.It lowers atherogenic apo B lipoproteins (eg LDL, VLDL) and raises anti atherogenic apo A-I lipoproteins (HDL).Its non-lipid reported effects include raising adiponectin, prostaglandins,and lowering oxidative stress.In clinical trials, used alone, it reduced risk for cardiovascular events comparable to statins.In arteriographic studies, it uniquely regresses atherosclerosis in coronary, femoral and carotid arteries when used with bile sequestrants or statins.
