Stability of thin liquid films on a solid substrate has been widely studied in view of its technological importance in many applications including coatings, adhesion and lubrication.[1] Our previous investigation indicated that both neat SAN and neat PMMA films were stable upon thermal or solvent annealing. However, the blend films with critical composition dewetted the substrate spontaneously by means of composition fluctuation.[2-4] In this work, therefore, stability of PMMA or SAN films with adding a spot of miscible component has been investigated with the help of atomic force microscopy(AFM).It was found that the miscible component has great influence on the stability of the films. For instance, neat PMMA film wets the substrate of silicon wafer very well(Figure 1A),while the blend(wt%SAN=1%,labeled as SAN1,sic passim)film dewets the substrate(Figure 1D).The stability of PMMA(or SAN)films with adding miscible SAN(or PMMA)component upon thermal or solvent annealing(including selective solvent and common solvent)has been discussed in detail. Our result is significant for not only controlling of film stability but also further understanding of the basic physical phenomena.
