Hybridization followed by polyploidization has been recognized as an important mode of speciation in plants. In order to examine the origin of allopolyploidy,we studied nine extant species of Eleusine,a genus containing three allotetraploid species and showing substantial ecological and morphological diversity.Interspecific phylogenetic relationships of Eleusine and the allopolyploid origin of finger millet (E.coracana) were investigated using partial sequences from the nuclear genes Pepc4 and EF-1α.
