Various chemical reactions, termed bioorthogonal reactions, had been developed that can be performed within the native biological context to avoid potential interference with the target biomacromolecules. My major research interest is to develop new technologies for site-specific incorporation of chemically functional groups in living systems that will allow these reactions to be carried out on proteins.Functionalized proteins can be site-specifically attached to various useful molecules such as fluorescent dyes by bioorthogonal reactions through these tags. The major advantage of this technique is its site-specificity as well as the small size of the tag which can be of minimum interference on targets to be labeled.
