  The Oriental vole,Microtus fortis,is one of the main rodent species in the Dongting Lake area.The voles live on the beach of the lake from early fall to early summer when the water level of the lake is below 27.5 m.At other times the voles live in the farmland.In spring to early summer as the water level of the lake rises,and the area of beach becomes narrower and,due to floodingand/or overcrowding,the voles move from the beach,across the wall of of the dike,onto the farmland.As the animals move onto the farmland they cause significant damage to the crops.The population fluctuations are different between the beach and the farmland.The lake beach provides the most suitable habitats for the voles.When the lake beach emerges as water levels decrease in the fall,the voles return to live on the beach.The main breeding season of the animal is from October to May (fall to early spring) when the voles inhabit the beach.The population density increases gradually over the breeding season.The period between emergence of the beach and the next flooding event determines the vole population size and when voles move into the farmland.The population density in farmland declined significanlty when the lake beach emerged,and remained very low during winter.
