Elevated CO2 stimulates photosynthesis and growth in many, but not all, species of marine phytoplankton. The most commonly offered explanation for this response is that high CO2 allows the system that supplies inorganic carbon for photosynthesis, the CO2 concentrating mechanism (CCM),to be down-regulated.
