Nonhuman primates, including rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta), cynomolgus (Macacafascicularis),and baboons (Papio hamadryas), and many other primate species develop type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in association with obesity and middle age, and this disease appears to be the same disease as develops frequently in humans. Our primate colony is under prospective longitudinal study of the physiology, pathophysiology and treatment of dyslipidemia, metabolic syndrome, and T2DM, as well as the pathology of the complications of diabetes as they develop and progress.
