Heavy metals in diets pose potential chronic hazards to human health.The objective of this study was to assess exposure risk of dietary heavy metals(As,Cd,Co,Cu,Pb,Se and Zn)intake by residents in Nanjing City,Jiangsu Province.A hundred and fifty three food samples,including rice,meat,vegetable,fish,milk and fruit,were collected from 10 hypermarkets in Nanjing City and heavy metal concentrations were measured.Among the sample collected,only the measured lead in several milk samples exceeded the safety limits given by FAO/WHO and Chinese regulations.Consequently,the estimated dietary heavy metals exposure risks for local adults were generally low,based on calculated hazard quotient(HQ)and estimated daily intake(EDI).However,HQ values for several metals were higher than 1 for the pregnant women and the infants,indicating that there could be health risk via dietary metal intake.Dietary exposure of metals through different food sources was compared and certain food types were found to have major contribution to dietary metal exposure(e.g.,rice to As exposure).Some dietary advisories were also provided to reduce heavy metal exposure risk.
