Astrocytes are the most numerous cell types in the brain and perform many functions that are essential for the normal activity of neurons in the brain.There is strong experimental evidence that astroeytes protect neurons against traumatic brain-induced injury.While astrocytes are generally considered more resistant than neurons to brain insults, few studies offer insight into how changes of astrocytic support functions may lead to loss of protection.Mitochondria are one of the primary targets of injury in astrocytes.
