Supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) are widely used in the concrete industry due to their economic and environmental advantages compared to systems containing solely Portland cement. Most of the emphasis up to recently has been on strength development. However, other aspects should be also considered, which can significantly affect the durability of structures, in particular early-age deformations and susceptibility to cracking.Among them, autogenous deformation is pronounced in systems with lower water to binder (w/b) ratio.

The need to limit the environmental impact of cementitious materials and to dispose of by-products such as fly ash and slag leads to the increasing use of supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs).I
Water confined within the nano-to microscale pores of cementitious materials plays a crucial role in damage processes affecting the sustainability of cement pastes, especially for the binding material
