Since the birth of the human race, beings have been pursuing light, the basis of our culture and civilization.Our ancestors tried to overcome the darkness of nights by making bonfires and torches, later by lighting candles and oil lamps.In the latter half of the 19th century, people learned how to convert electric energy into light.Since then, artificial light has made remarkable progress, changing the lifestyle of people in less than a century, and having great impact on cities and architecture.As the result, human activities were no longer restricted to the daytime; with artificial light, nighttime has become an additional time for human activities.Therefore, light has a deep influence on all aspects of our daily lives.Without light, we could not live as we do today.Through Japans history of more than a hundred years since the Meiji Restoration, Japanese cities have become uniform and have lost their traditional beauty.In other words, in order to build a beautiful city, it is import to properly create scenery first.A variety of different lighting cultures germinated and bloomed in each civilization in the world.Through multi-faceted lecture and discussion of climate, history, religion, tradition, life, and technology etc., we will explore the future of lighting culture.
