IGF-1 is essential for normal mammary gland development but also associated with premenopausal breast cancer risk.Combined oral contraceptives (OCs) decrease the IGF-1 levels in most women.The endogenous estrogens and their metabolites also influence IGF-1 levels.Glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) are involved in metabolism of estrogen metabolites.We studied the IGF-1 levels in 258 women (≤40 years), first in relation to deletions in the GSTM1 and GSTT1 genes (GSTM1*0 and GSTT1*0) and OC status (n=229), and secondly in relation to GSTP1*1B (rs1695) and OC status.Questionnaires requesting information on reproductive factors and OC use were completed and blood samples were obtained from all women.
