Mass spectrometry (MS) plays a very visible role in biopharmaceutical industry, and it has been widely used for the development, characterization, and quality control of protein drugs.Over the last decade or so, modern MS instrumentation has experienced significant changes with many novel technologies incorporated and more powerful mass spectrometers invented. As a result, many different types of mass spectrometers have been deployed in the biopharmaceutical industry. The aim of the session is to provide a tutorial to cover the basic fundamental principles of mass spectrometry that is commonly seen in the biopharmaceutical industry and to help new MS users to better understand the powerful analytical technique.Topics such as common ionization methods for peptides and proteins, the basic operation principles of mass analyzers (e.g.Quadrupole, TOF, Orbitrap) as well as how to interpret protein/peptide mass spectra will be covered and discussed. In addition, the influence of MS instrument specification (e.g.resolution) on the spectrum quality and consequently analytical information acquired for biotherapeutics will be illustrated, and tips and tricks on Tof-MS instrument operations will be shared.
