Background To investigate the clinicopathological features and analysis on the recurrence factors of endometrial polyps. Methods Retrospectively analyzed the clinical files of the 1303 endometrial polyps diagnosed by hysteroscopy and pathology in Shengjing Hospital of China Medical University from January 2010 to December 2011.Results The mean age of 1303 patients is 39.7± 10.1 years(range: 18 ~84 years), and the median age is 39 years.Among the 1303 study patients, 1182 and 121 are pre-and postmenopausal, respectively. All clinical characteristics [age、 abnormal uterine bleeding(AUB)、 pathological types、 history of hypertension and diabetes]between women in the pre-and postmenopausal status were significantly different (p < 0.001), except for endometrial polyps size (p > 0.05).And it should be noted that the presence of AUB was significantly higher in premenopausal than postmenopausal women, however the trend of polyps with malignant features was the opposite (p < 0.001).The overall recurrence rate was high (6.0%) and did not vary (p >0.05) with age, history of hypertension and diabetes, endometrial polyps size or other clinical characteristics of the patients. Conclusion Premenopausal patients with endometrial polyps always have clinical symptoms to achieve early detection, whereas the postmenopausal have no obvious symptoms to overlook their conditions.Regarding the increasing risk for malignant endometrial polyps, postmenopausal patients should have regular gynecological examinations, strive to achieve early detection , make early diagnosis and receive early treatment to avoid the occurrence of malignant endometrial polyps.Concerning recurrences, prospective long-time follow-up studies after hysteroscopic polypectomy to evaluate the recurrence rate of endometrial polyps is needed.
