Trade is today more global than ever before.A product could be designed in one region, produced in another and consumed in countries far from where it was designed and produced. To facilitate the effective global distribution of goods and products, packaging is essential and should serve not only to protect the product during distribution and storage but also to inform consumers, display at retailers shelves and make handling easy for the consumers. An increasing demand in policy on resource conservation and minimized impact on the environment has also added to the requirements on packaging.Such requirements have in some situations created problems due to restrictions in the use of packaging. To overcome national or regional requirements with sometimes protectionist ambitions, harmonized international standards on packaging and the environment are essential. The ISO project TC 122/SC4 will develop harmonized standards to minimize the risk for technical trade barriers.
