In organic synthesis/transformations,use of toxic, volatile, explosive, distressing odor and costly catalyst or reagents are inevitable. It is,therefore, scientist or researchers have been tried to develop safe, compatible and cost effective alternative chemicals or processing methods to avoid various ill-effects or accidents in academia as well as in industry. Our group has been actively engaged in development of safe and efficient processing methods to handle dangerous and toxic components in simple and cost-effective manner for sustainable growth. So,I will be enlightening on recent achievements as listed below.Vertically aligned, functionalized mesoporous silica film from single polymeric precursor to immobilize metal catalyst: Herein,we report an innovative single precursor approach to prepare the vertically aligned mesoporous silica thin film at large area of on conducting and non-cunducting surface with high thermal and chemical robustness. The –SH functionalized inner wall of the mesopores could be decorated with various metals such as gold, palladium and silver in a site-selective manner for durable and efficient heterogeneous catalysis.Nanobrush polymer microreactor for toxic OsO4 heterogeneous catalysis: OsO4 is an excellent catalyst for dihydroxylation and oxidative cleavage olefins, but,it is highly toxic, hazardous, expensive, and volatile in nature. In order to overcome these issues,we developed a safe, highly efficient and cost effective poly (dimethysiloxane) (PDMS) chip based microreactor with immobilized OsO4 catalyst on poly (4-vinylpyridine) (P4VP).Integrated Microfluidic System for Odorless Isocyanide Chemistry: Isocyanides are very useful class of chemical intermediates in combinatorial synthesis. But they have extremely distressing odor, the foul smell makes their purification especially difficult as their exposure, even at very low level. We developed an automated continuous microfluidic system that performs a serial synthesis, purification, and in-situ consumption of isocyanides into final products.
