Silicon carbide(SiC)ceramics have many excellent properties.However,the fracture toughness of the pressureless sintered SiC ceramics is low,which is usually 2-3 MPa·m1/2.In our previous study,carbon nanofibers(CNFs)were compounded with SiC and the obtained 3wt%CNFs/SiC composite showed 50%increase in the fracture toughness,compared with the monolithic SiC.The improved fracture toughness resulted from the pullout and/or bridging effect of CNFs bonded with SiC grains much more closely.
