Targeted microbubbles are widely investigated as contrast agents for ultrasound molecular imaging.Ligand-carrying microbubbles are injected in the bloodstream, and accumulate on the surface of vascular endothelium that expresses the markers of disease (e.g., the markers of tumor neovasculature, inflammation and ischemia-reperfusion injury).Following the clearance of circulating microbubbles from the bloodstream, ultrasound imaging of the targeted microbubbles can be performed to delineate the area of disease.Specialized ultrasound contrast imaging tools allow detection of individual microbubbles with almost complete suppression of the background tissue signal, providing excellent detection sensitivity.Efficacy of the microbubble accumulation on the target surface is dependent on the surface density of the receptor:this is the general basis for the quantification of the disease marker by ultrasound imaging.However,it is not dependent solely on that parameter.
