Chemoselective reduction of various carbonyl compounds to alcohols with methylamine-borane (MAB),a remarkable thermal and hydrolytic stable,environmentally benign,and easily handled reagent,in neat water is achieved in quantitative conversions and high isolated yields.As expected,α-and β-keto esters are selectively reduced to corresponding hydroxyl esters by MAB,while diols are obtained when using sodium borohydride in water.The competitive and intra-chemoselective experiments show that MAB effectively discriminates between aldehydes and ketones.
