Vibrating mesh nebulizers are devices which employ perforated plates that generate the aerosol without heating the fluid during atomization and have been shown to be suitable for delivery of suspensions. The mechanism of nebulizer is simple, ease of use, generating small particles size, and has been widely used to treat respiratory diseases recently. In this study, the effect of operating conditions, vibrating mode, and nozzle design on the aerosol droplet size and output rate with vibrating mesh are investigated. The pattern of liquid film on the surface of the nozzle plate was also observed. The influence of the pore number and the pore size on the spray performance is discussed at a fixed frequency with different voltage and waveform. The results show the pore size is an important parameter on nozzle design and the increase in pore size may result in both the increase of aerosol droplet size and output rate. Results also show that vibration mode is an importance parameter on the performance of nebulization. The distribution of fine droplets and larger mass flow depend on the resonant amplitude. Due to the phenomenon of resonance at certain vibration frequencies, the surface moving in a characteristic pattern of standing waves, and thus the membrane can store vibrational energy. In top of standing wave, it can increase the mass flow rate, and increase the droplet size. Thus, the membrane vibration indeed affects the performance of nebulization.
