Plants are equipped with a variety of immune receptors controlling a sophisticated signal transduction network. They form a powerful surveillance system allowing the detection of potentially harmful microbes and rapid activation of plant defenses which culminate in physiological changes and chemical alterations that deter pathogen entry and propagation in plant tissues or the elimination of the pathogen. However, pathogenic microbes possess specialized machinery and virulence factors and are able to overcome plant immunity.
