Developers of Solar power can be influenced by tax policy, greenhouse gas driven policies, as well as challenging public involvement and environmental impact requirements.The patchwork of existing policies often leads to confusion and additional complexity when seeking to site new solar facilities.In North America there are two regional initiatives-the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) in the US Northeast and the Western Climate Initiative (WCI) that currently involves California in the US and British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec in Canada.The government of the US has a power production incentive (PPI) that provides tax subsidy for renewable energy production.Canada has a similar renewable power production incentive (RPPI) in place but smaller in size.Today, many states are moving towards renewable portfolio standards (RPS) and a similar policy has been entertained in the US Senate.All these policies are subject to the political pressures seen in both Canada and the US.To successfully develop solar power projects companies need to be acutely aware of the changing political environment at both federal and provincial/state levels on a real-time basis.
