Lithium carbonate (Li2CO3) was added in well-dispersed Ce0.8Sm0.2O1.9 (SDC) powder to lower the sintering temperature of SDC for intermediate temperature solid oxide fuel cells (IT-SOFC).Addition of 5mol% and 10mol%Li2CO3 decreases the sintering temperature of SDC from 1400oC to 1000oC and 900℃,respectively.X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopic characterizations indicate that the Li atoms do not enter the lattice of SDC.Rather, the added Li2CO3 decomposes to lithium oxide and then the lithium oxide is volatilized during SDC sintering.SEM and impedance spectroscopy indicated that a liquid phase sintering process occurs on the grain boundaries. This work might be helpful to understand the mechanism of lithium oxide aiding sintering.
