Plants produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) under biotic or abiotic stresses.While ROS at low levels act as signaling molecules to activate cellular programs to cope with stresses, high-levels of ROS may cause oxidative damage to cells, and thus are prevented by cellular antioxidant systems,unless they are locally deployed for fighting against pathogens.In Arabidopsis leaves, massive H2O2 is produced, via an unknown mechanism, in powdery mildew-invaded epidermal cells expressing RPW8.2, an atypical resistance protein acting at the extrahaustorial membrane (EHM).
